Westlea Housing is asking Swindon residents to suggest a name for a development of nine new bungalows now being built in Penhill.

"As these homes are for local people, we'd like to give local people the chance to suggest a suitable name for this scheme," says Jamir Ali, Development Projects Manager at for the GreenSquare housing group, which includes Wiltshire-based Westlea Housing Association.

"The final decision on a name will be made by Swindon Borough Council, but we would like to put forward suggestions from local people for them to consider when that decision is made."

Contractors RJ Leighfield & Sons have recently started work at the site -  which is situated on the main Cirencester road near Grafton Road - and the scheme is due to be completed in early 2011. When complete, the homes will be will be let by Westlea Housing for affordable rent to local people whose needs are met by the properties.

All nine bungalows have been designed to be highly accessible, with two of them being fully wheelchair-accessible. They will also be cheap to run as they are being built to meet level 4 of the code for sustainable homes; the homes will incorporate many eco-friendly features and materials including solar panels to heat water and photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight to electricity, resulting in very low bills for the residents.

"Providing these smart new bungalows for affordable rent in Swindon may give some residents the chance to move from larger houses, meaning they become available for families in housing need," said Jamir.

Anyone wanting to send a suggestion for a name should email communications@greensquaregroup.com or call 01865 782540; please give details of the proposed name, why it should be selected, and your contact details.

There will be £50 worth of vouchers awarded should your name eventually be selected. Closing date for entries is 9th August 2010.
