Young
people in Chippenham are being invited to come along to a disco event,
organised by Wiltshire Police and sponsored by Westlea Housing.
The 'Bluez N Zuz' night will be held at The Olympiad leisure centre
on May 2 and is designed specifically for young people aged between
12 and
16. The night is designed to let underage teenagers enjoy a night out
in a realistic but safe environment. Sergeant Martin Alvis said: "It
is a fantastic opportunity for the young people of Chippenham to come
down and enjoy a safe and friendly environment.
"This facility has not been available in Chippenham for a number of years
and I think it is brilliant that it has returned. It seems to be a hit
wherever it goes - often attracting up to a hundred kids. It encourages
teenagers to act responsibly but also gives them the perfect opportunity
to let their hair down.
"I am grateful to Westlea Housing association for sponsoring the event
and working in partnership with us. I will be attending the event with
a number of Police Community Support Officers so parents have absolutely
nothing to worry about."
Westlea's Head of Neighbourhood Services, Shirley Davies, said: "These
events have been a hit in other towns in Wiltshire and we're very pleased
to be able to sponsor this Chippenham night as part of our ongoing partnership
work with Wiltshire Police."
The scheme has been rolled out across the county wherever anti-social
problems are common. So far this year, similar discos have been held
in Calne and Devizes. The event, which runs from 7pm to 9.30pm, will
be hosted by the This Way Up roadshow. Tickets cost £2 and can
be bought on the door.
