IN Business for Neighnourhoods

Community Development Survey Results 2009

Westlea Housing Association is committed through its Business Plan to the National Housing Federation’s iN Business for Neighbourhoods agenda. This means that we:

  • will create places where people want to live
  • will invest in a range of services as well as homes; and
  • are an independent social business working with local people and partner organisations to deliver results.

We are committed to improving and expanding our work in three key areas including Community Development and Quality of life initiatives. In many of the areas in which we operate we own a very significant proportion of the homes in the neighbourhood. We want to ensure that those neighbourhoods are places where our residents and private occupiers are happy to live. This means we must deal with problems such as antisocial behaviour and harassment quickly and effectively and sustain a pleasant physical environment of which residents can feel proud. As well as housing, we want to provide help and support where our residents want and need them – for example with money, health, and family issues. We work with many statutory and voluntary agencies to support this vision (Westlea Business Plan 2007-12).

In order to ascertain residents’ priorities, we have carried out a series of Community Development Surveys, the first of which was completed in March 2005. This survey established what residents’ priorities were, and set a baseline that could be used to track the impact of future projects. Further surveys were conducted in 2006 and 2007. The survey results were used to enable us to allocate resources and to set up partnerships, with organisations such as the Youth Service and Barnardo’s to try to resolve matters. The results this year will be used to strengthen and expand our partnerships, and also to assist in devising a revised Customer and Community Involvement Strategy.

These findings show:

  • the areas surveyed
  • information about how the data was collected
  • the methodology used to ‘score’ the results
  • Individual summaries for each of the areas surveyed.

The summaries for each area also include key facts, such as turnover rates, Housing Benefit take up rates, and crime figures, along with a comparison with 2007’s results, where applicable. If you would like further information regarding the survey, or are interested in working with us to help us achieve our aims, please do not hesitate to contact Jen Eastman, Neighbourhood Involvement Advisor on 01249 466168, or at jen.eastman@westlea.co.uk.
